Bucharest – a european capital
Bucharest is the most important city in the country because of its architectural, historic, and cultural heritage, and it is also an attraction for business and commerce. The Romanian capital city is also the most important communications center in the country: the main departure point for 9 international cities by rail and 8 by motorway, serviced by two airports at Otopeni and Baneasa.
THE OLD CENTER OF THE CITY
A series of streets in the old center of Bucharest – Baratiei, Baia de Fier, Sf. Ioan Nou – are still surrounded by houses with tall windows, adorned with a variety of decorative elements, with wrought iron balconies which are considered true works of art. The narrow and deep yards, decorated with vine and old trees fill the streets with a beautiful scent and are popular for romantic walks by day or by night.
Located in front of the famous Hanul lui Manuc, Curtea Veche comprises of an interior yard surrounded by many rooms, reminding of the setting of an historical movie. Nearby, the streets Lipscani and Gabroveni are bustling with commercial activities.
The Stavropoleos Church represents a true architectural jewel, built in 1724 at the initiative of a Greek monk. Next door, Carul cu Bere (1879) is highly popular among the people of Bucharest, who enjoy relaxing in this neo-gothic setting.
Calea Victoriei was, and still is, considered the most famous artery, having a North-South orientation. There are many magnificent buildings: CEC, the National History Museum, the Palace of the Post, the National Military Circle, the Capsa House, the Royal Palace, the University Central Library, the Romanian Atheneum (1886-1888), the Hilton-Athéné Palace Hotel, the White Church, the Art Collection Museum and the Vernescu Hotel (today also comprising the casino).
In the center of Bucharest you will also see: the University of Bucharest (1869), the Faculty of Architecture (1927) and the National Theatre.
THE PARLIAMENT PALACE
The Palace of Parliament, a monumental building comissioned by the dictator Ceausescu before 1989, is the second largest building in the world after the Pentagon in Washington.
The building has a rectangular shape - 270 m x 240 m, and rises to a height of 84 m. The many rooms – offices, chambers and conference halls - house the headquarters of the Romanian Parliament. It also hosts the Museum of Contemporary Art and is a popular venue for conferences, fairs and exhibitions.
