Maramures - A Land From Tales
Situated in the North-West, Maramures overlooks the mountains and the depressions that bear the same name - including Oas, Gutai and Tibles. Here, the natural landscape blends perfectly with nature, resulting in one of the most interesting touristic regions of the country and this is sustained by a rich cultural history.
The Maramures villages, founded along the millenniums, spreads along the main vales and is easily recognized by its’ timber structures and original architecture. Today, during holy days and on Sundays, the inhabitants of the Maramures hinterland can be seen in the village dressed in traditional costume as they go about their business. These traditions are honoured at festival times such as: “As many flowers are on Iza” (ecologic and folklore festival for the Youth – Dragomiresti April 18th), “Spring harmonies” (artistic cultural festival – Viseul de Sus April 24th/25th) “Lofty flower on Iza”( festival contest of interpretation of popular music – Sieu May 22nd/23rd) “Sanziene” (old folklore custom – Borsa June 19th/20th ), “For my honey from Botiza” (Culture Days at Botiza – Botiza July 17th/18th ) etc.
TRADITION AND CREATIVITY
Maramures is renowned for its’ wooden churches and clay ceramics. The wood carving techniques form such an integral part of the area’s rich cultural history that they became an art form.. In present times in Maramures more than 50 churches are made of wood. In fact, some of them are included in UNESCO in the universal patrimony and the oldest of them dates back to 1364. This can be found in the village of Ieud. Every church has its’ own history, a history which the locals will happily share with you.
The ceramics in Maramures, which has unique technical and aesthetic characteristics is of Dacian origin and has been handed down from generation to generation. The whole process is quite impressive and its’ uniqueness has much to do with its natural style and the simplicity of the people who make it. A visiting to a ceramic center is very worthwhile and you will have an opportunity to see at first hand the creation of some beautiful and precious pieces all of which can be purchased in the shop.
