Things to Do in Constanța: Old Town, Waterfront and Beach Access
We may earn a commission from some links on this page.

The short answer
Choose Constanța for a city walk with optional beach time. Sleep in town if sights and meals matter most. Compare Mamaia if the beach will shape most of your stay. Check building access separately from the public waterfront walk.
What's covered9
By Unseen Romania · Updated
For things to do in Constanta, start on the Old Town peninsula: walk from Ovid Square towards the sea, follow the waterfront past the Casino, and finish near Tomis harbour. Add a museum or beach time if the day allows. You can enjoy a first visit without crossing the whole city.
Choose a Constanța city and beach visit
Choose Constanța for architecture, Old Town streets and harbour views alongside beach time. Stay in the city or visit for a day from a nearby resort.
For a short visit, choose one walking area and one optional indoor site. Trying to combine the peninsula, several museums and a long beach session creates a day with too many moving parts. A slower walk gives you room for a meal and a change in weather.
The railway station is outside the Old Town peninsula. Allow for the onward journey before booking timed entry. Leave luggage at your accommodation or arrange storage before starting the walk.
Visitors staying in Mamaia should also plan the return. A local bus route good during the day may not fit a late dinner. Use the current CT BUS details for the exact stops and service. Do not assume that a seasonal connection from an old plan still applies.
Sights from the old centre to the seafront
1. Begin at Ovid Square

Use Piața Ovidiu as the centre of the Old Town portion of your visit. Look around the square before deciding which indoor stops fit. This is a better place to orient yourself than trying to follow an unordered list of sights spread across the city.
Allow space to notice the surrounding buildings and streets. A square can be a good pause between sights. It is more than a photo stop. If you have just arrived, check the direction of your next stop before heading down towards the waterfront.
The Constanța municipality is the primary starting point for current city notices. For entry to a museum or religious building, use that institution's own visitor details as well. A location on the square does not establish opening hours.
2. Explore the nearby Old Town streets

Choose a small loop through the peninsula. Avoid trying to cover each street. Pay attention to changes in surface and level. A route that looks short on a map can be awkward if your group needs a smooth, step-free walk.
Keep the walk flexible, with time for a drink or meal. Choose a lunch stop near the route rather than interrupting a short visit to cross town.
At churches and mosques, follow posted visiting rules and respect worship. Seeing a landmark from the street does not establish access to its interior.
3. Continue towards the sea-facing edge

The waterfront changes the feel of the visit. Use it as the next stage after the tighter Old Town streets. Look for a comfortable public approach. Avoid assuming that each staircase or gap between buildings is the right route.
The promenade is more exposed to wind than the square. Bring a layer when the forecast calls for one and shorten the waterfront section if it becomes uncomfortable.
If the group walks at different speeds, agree on a named landmark as a meeting place. Keep the next stop within everyone's walking range.
4. See the Casino from the waterfront

The Casino is a landmark on the seafront walk. Viewing it from the promenade and taking a ticketed interior visit are separate activities.
For an interior visit, use the building's own current visitor information for tickets and access. Restoration photographs do not establish opening hours.
You can still include the exterior in a walking plan without promising an interior. That keeps the day good even if tickets or access do not fit. For building and public-space notices, return to the municipal source.
5. Finish around Tomis harbour

Tomis harbour makes a natural final waterfront area for the walk. Treat it as a place to pause and look at the water. Do not assume an excursion leaves from that point. Any excursion needs its own confirmed meeting point and company.
If you plan a meal nearby, compare the exact menu and setting. A harbour address can mean an exposed terrace, an indoor room or a table farther from the water. Choose the experience you want. Avoid assuming that all businesses with a harbour label offer the same view.
From here, decide whether to return through the Old Town or continue towards a beach area. Do not tack on a beach simply because you can see the sea. Check the public approach, services and terms first, in particular when travelling with children or anyone who finds steps difficult.

Old Town, Tomis and waterfront walking map
Use the map below to understand the relationship between the square, Casino and harbour. The order is a suggested walk, not a measured route or a step-free access certification. Follow public paths and current diversions on the day.

Walk from Ovid Square through the Old Town to the Casino waterfront, then continue towards Tomis harbour. Reverse the order if it suits your arrival. Allow a half-day for a relaxed walk and meal; that is a suggested allocation rather than a measured walking time.
For a group with limited walking range, shorten the route at the planning stage. Choose the square and one waterfront landmark. Then arrange the return. That is better than starting a long loop and discovering halfway through that the return is too much.
Avoid estimating access from the map alone. Pavements, steps, works and entrances determine the real experience. If a museum visit is key, ask that institution about the entrance you will use. A general map label cannot check whether a lift, ramp or accessible toilet is available.
Museums and current Casino access
Choose a museum because its subject interests you. Avoid using it as a generic indoor filler. The peninsula's archaeological setting may be a good match for a history-focused day. Another visitor may prefer to keep the walk outdoors and spend more time by the sea.
Check the institution's own visitor page for the current building, exhibitions, access and ticket terms. Museum names can cover more than one site or collection. A general city summary is not enough to check that a chosen display is open at the building you intend to enter.
For a guided visit, distinguish exterior sightseeing from included admission. A tour that mentions the Casino may pass it on foot without entering.
The Casino's exterior and waterfront are enough to make it part of this route. An interior visit should be added only after the current visitor plan is clear. Check the exact visitor details for your date before making the interior the main purpose of the day.
If a museum is the main purpose of the day, arrange the walk around its admission time. Last entry can be earlier than closing, so allow time to reach it and see the collection.
For rainy weather, avoid assuming that each site will be a handy substitute. Check the opening day and whether advance booking applies before leaving the hotel. A café break or a shorter walk may be a better choice than crossing the city for an uncertain visit.
City beaches versus a Mamaia stay
Choose a city beach for time on the sand alongside city sights. Choose Mamaia if the beach and resort routine lead the holiday. Services and swimming conditions vary at either location.
| Stay style | Best fit | Daily question | Main limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Old Town or central city | Sights, meals and waterfront walks | How will you reach the beach entrance? | The sea view is not always beach access |
| City beach area | A closer relationship to the sand | What services operate on your dates? | Your city walk may need a separate journey |
| Southern Mamaia | A resort stay with city outings | Which current local connection serves the address? | You still need to travel into the Old Town |
| Northern resort area | A beach-focused stay | Can daily needs be met nearby? | A city outing needs more deliberate planning |

Beach photos age quickly as evidence of services. Look for the current company's terms if you want loungers or other services. Ask the lodging what it includes. Avoid treating the nearest beach photo as part of the room booking.
For swimming, use local signs, lifeguard instructions and the current weather. ANM supplies forecasts and warnings. A city guide cannot certify the water conditions for your visit.
Our Mamaia guide handles the resort's area choices. For the full north-to-south coast comparison, use the Romania beaches guide. Those comparisons are better than treating each beach within reach of Constanța as the same product.
Arrival, local transport, food and accommodation
Arrive with the final leg planned
Search CFR's official trip planner for your date and arrival station. Then plan the local connection to the hotel or start of the walk. The rail trip is only one part of an arrival day.
For Mamaia, compare the bus connection with a taxi if you have several cases. The Bucharest-to-Mamaia guide covers the full chain.
Driving requires a parking plan at both the lodging and any sightseeing stop. Ask about the exact entrance and parking terms. Do not assume that a narrow Old Town street permits you to stop outside a property simply because a booking map places the pin there.
Use the current local network
CT BUS lists line 100 from Gară via Lăpușneanu to Sat Vacanță, with line 223 continuing along Bulevardul Mamaia towards Năvodari. These routes changed on 1 November 2026; the old direct 100 Mamaia is marked suspended. Use the operator's planner for the precise stop and live departure.
Check the stop on both sides of the trip. A route serving the general area may leave you with a walk at the place. For the return, check the direction and stop again. Do not assume that the opposite platform or roadside is always correct.
Choose meals around the day's geography
Keep lunch near the part of the city you are already visiting. Crossing town for a meal can make a short sightseeing day feel fragmented. Compare menus and the current opening details of the business you choose.
If dietary needs matter, ask about the exact dish and kitchen practice. A general cuisine label is not enough to check ingredients. A harbour view or attractive terrace should come after the food needs. Avoid replacing them.
Choose a room for the way you will use the city
A central room suits an early walk and evening meals. A beach-area room can reduce the daily trip to the sand. A station-area room may simplify one arrival but still be a poor fit for the rest of the stay. Compare the whole visit, not just the first transfer.
Check noise, reception hours and baggage details before booking. If you arrive before check-in or leave after checkout, check whether the property offers storage. Do not assume that an apartment has the same luggage service as a staffed hotel.
First settle the location. Then compare exact room types and terms. If a listing promises a view, check whether that applies to the room category you will book. A photo of another room does not settle that question.
Put the day in a useful order
For a suggested day, arrive, leave bags, walk the peninsula, choose lunch near the walk and add either an indoor visit or beach time. For an overnight stay, leave a second walk for the following morning. Avoid rushing each landmark before dinner.
If the weather turns, shorten the exposed waterfront portion. If a site is unavailable, keep the geographical walk and replace only that stop. A good city day should not depend on each door being open or each optional activity operating.
For a longer holiday, combine Constanța with the Delta or Transylvania. Give each region a travel day rather than treating it as an extra stop on the city walk.
Verdict
For things to do in Constanta, put the Old Town and waterfront first. Add a museum only after checking its current visitor details. Keep beach time as a deliberate choice. Constanța is strongest as a city-and-sea base. Meanwhile, Mamaia suits a stay shaped around the resort beach.
Frequently asked questions
Can I see the Casino without booking an interior visit?
Yes, the exterior is on the waterfront walking route. An interior visit requires separate admission arrangements. Include the promenade in your walking day, then add an indoor visit if the building's current visitor information and available times suit you.
Should I stay in Constanța or Mamaia?
Choose Constanța if the Old Town, meals and city walks lead your plans. Choose Mamaia if your daily routine centres on a chosen beach area. Map the lodging and final transport leg before booking. A broad place label does not tell you the room's beach access or noise level.
Is the railway station the end of the journey?
It is the end of the rail leg. You still need to reach the room, Old Town or onward resort. Use CFR for the arrival and CT BUS for current local connections. With bags or a late arrival, settle that last part before choosing the train or booking a timed site.
How should I combine a walk and beach time?
Choose one coherent Old Town route. Then one beach area with a known public approach. Leave time for the connection and check local terms. Seeing the sea from the promenade does not mean that you have reached a beach entrance, and an older photo does not prove today's services.
