The short answer

Choose a day from Tulcea for an introduction, a lodge-based birding stay for repeated outings, or a floating-hotel cruise for several nights on the water. Compare permitted routes, boat shelter, meals and the journey to the departure point.

Compare Danube Delta tours by gateway, boat and time spent observing rather than in transit. A day from Tulcea, a lodge-based birding stay and a floating-hotel cruise give different amounts of time inside the reserve. Arrange travel to the gateway separately from the excursion.

Mila 23, Letea and Sulina from Tulcea

Best for: a full-day boat route from Tulcea.

Trade-off: the journey to Tulcea is separate.

Choose a boat trip by gateway and time

Start with where you will sleep. A Tulcea departure differs from one in Sulina or a village. From Bucharest or the coast, allow a separate journey to reach the boat, often with a night at the gateway.

Choose between forest, birding and a cross-Delta journey to the sea. Birding rewards time spent observing; reaching a distant town uses more of the day in transit.

Compare day trips and longer stays

A day trip keeps accommodation in Tulcea. A lodge stay gives you repeated departures from one base. A floating hotel moves the overnight base through the waterways. The Discover Danube Delta shared trips below are advertised for 2027, rather than as departures running in November 2026.

TripDepartureMain purposeBoat and paceMain limitation
Discover Danube Delta: Letea day Tulcea Waterways, Mila 23 and Letea Forest Open boat plus a land connection A long shared day with a common pace
Discover Danube Delta: birding day Tulcea Bird observation around the Mila 23 route Open boat with birding focus Not a private photography session
Discover Danube Delta: private Sulina day Tulcea Cross-Delta journey and time in Sulina Private open boat Town landing does not include the beach transfer
Bunica Maria: four-day birding stay Lodge base; agree the arrival meeting point Two days of birding by boat Two excursions of about six hours each Airport transfer costs extra; accommodation wording needs clarification
Ibis Tours: five-day Crișan–Letea cruise Confirm the cruise boarding point Several nights within the Delta Floating hotel plus daily motorboat excursions A longer commitment than a day excursion

Choose a route and pace

For a full day from Tulcea, compare the Mila 23, Letea and Sulina boat tour.

1. Shared Tulcea–Letea day trip

Choose the shared Letea programme when the forest is an important part of the day. The listed route combines boat travel, a Mila 23 stop and a land connection at Letea. It uses Port Tulcea Aval as the meeting area.

Best fit: travellers happy with a substantial shared nature outing. Main limit: you share the pace, and the return is not a fixed-hour promise. The company warns against an onward bus, train or flight that evening. Its open boats do not provide a roof or shade, and lunch is optional, not included.

2. Shared birding and bird photography day

The shared birding programme starts at sunrise from Port Tulcea Aval, with 8–10 hours towards Mila 23. Its 2027 price is €90 per person, with an English-speaking birding guide, an open boat and reserve fees. Groups have four to eight guests.

Best fit: a shared day focused on birds. Main limit: it is not a photography tour that waits for hours with one subject. Optional lunch in Mila 23 costs 100–150 RON, payable in cash. Sightings vary with season, water and weather.

3. Private Tulcea–Sulina day trip

Choose the private Sulina programme when the town and Black Sea are the purpose. The company describes a route through Mila 23 and the Old Danube, with free time in Sulina.

Best fit: a group wanting its own boat for a cross-Delta journey. Main limit: the landing is in town; beach transport, lunch and drinks cost extra. Read the private booking's deposit and cancellation terms.

Compare this with an overnight stay in Sulina. Sleeping there separates the journey from beach time and local outings rather than fitting everything between two boat legs.

4. Bunica Maria: four-day birding stay

Bunica Maria's four-day programme includes three nights and two boat outings of about six hours each. Day one is arrival, days two and three are birding excursions, and day four ends after breakfast. An English-speaking guide, meals and reserve entrance fees appear among the inclusions. Airport transfers cost extra.

Best fit: visitors wanting two full birding days from one lodge base. Main limit: the page calls the accommodation an eco lodge in its overview but tented accommodation in its inclusions. Ask which room or unit the quote provides. The operator publishes no fixed price.

Arrival and departure days are not advertised as full excursion days; the four-day stay provides two boat days.

5. Ibis Tours: five-day floating-hotel cruise

Ibis Tours advertises a five-day, four-night Crișan–Letea wildlife cruise from €1,190/adult. It combines a floating hotel with daily motorboat excursions, Mila 23 and Letea Forest. The published group limit is 20, with five to eight people per excursion boat. Full board and a naturalist guide are included.

Best fit: several nights on the water. The floating hotel provides the overnight base, while smaller boats take guests on excursions.

Ibis also advertises a five-day Sfântu Gheorghe–Sulina–Letea route from €1,390/adult. Choose that direction if the sea-facing settlements matter more than the interior-lake emphasis of the Crișan route.

Access to the departure point

Travel to Tulcea is separate unless the programme includes a transfer.

For rail, search CFR Călători for your date and Tulcea arrival, including any changes. Add the local journey to the quay, luggage handling and boarding time before judging a same-day connection.

Use the Tulcea guide for a gateway night before an early departure.

Permits, conservation and weather changes

The official ARBDD permit service lists standard visitor permits at 5 RON for one day, 15 RON for seven days and 30 RON until year-end, with free permits for eligible categories. Vehicle, boat and activity permits are separate. Ask whether the operator obtains your personal visitor permit or expects you to bring it.

A visitor permit does not open every channel or protected landing. Ask the operator for its authorised route and accept changes required by conservation or navigation conditions. ARBDD lists overnight permits for slow tourism on named channels separately; ordinary tourist access does not provide unrestricted camping permission.

Weather affects comfort as well as route feasibility. Ask about cover, wind exposure and the company's cancellation decision. Use ANM for official warnings. A general statement that a tour operates in the season does not establish the conditions on one day.

Inclusions, accessibility and cancellation

Compare boat transport, guiding, meals, reserve fees and land transfers. Agree dietary needs before a remote meal stop.

Ask about the complete access chain if mobility matters. Quay steps, boarding height, boat seating, landings and the forest portion can each affect suitability. A shared trip and a private trip may use similar craft. So private does not always mean accessible.

Before paying, check the quote's dates, boat, inclusions and cancellation terms.

Verdict

Choose Danube Delta tours by purpose and time available. Compare a Tulcea day, two birding days from a lodge, and a four-night floating-hotel stay. Include gateway transport, meals and reserve permits in the budget, with room for route changes and a variable return.

Frequently asked questions

Are these programmes running today?

Discover Danube Delta's shared Letea and birding pages describe the 2027 season, not departures running in November 2026.

Does a Tulcea tour include travel from Bucharest?

Only if the booking includes it. Otherwise add travel to Tulcea and a night there if needed for the departure.

Is a longer tour better for birds?

Not necessarily. A birding-led outing can cover less ground but allow longer pauses. No format promises particular sightings.

Does the Sulina excursion land on the beach?

Discover Danube Delta's private programme stops in Sulina town, with beach transport excluded. Allow for the local journey and return to the boat if beach time is the main reason for choosing it.
