The short answer

For Henri Coandă Airport, compare the train to Gara de Nord plus a city connection against bus 100 toward Piața Unirii. Use the exact address of your stay to choose the last stop. A private pickup can reduce changes, but confirm where the car can leave you. Keep your return airport and check-in time with the same plan.

What's covered8

The best Bucharest airport to Old Town route depends on your landing airport, arrival time and final street. A train to Gara de Nord still leaves a city trip. A bus to Piața Unirii still leaves a walk. A booked car may stop outside a pedestrian street.

Compare each complete chain before choosing.

Identify your Bucharest airport and Old Town address

Read the airport code on your flight booking first. Henri Coandă, also called Otopeni, uses OTP. Bucharest Băneasa Aurel Vlaicu uses BBU. Do not enter “Bucharest airport” alone in a transfer booking.

A driver at the wrong airport cannot make that mistake disappear.

The Bucharest Airports directory identifies the separate airports and their own details pages. Follow the page for your actual arrival airport when checking its ground transport. The Henri Coandă route below is not a Băneasa arrival plan.

Next save the full address of your stay, including its entrance instructions. Old Town is an area, not a station. A property near the northern edge may suit a different stop from one near the river. The name on a booking map can also cover a wider area than the historic streets.

Ask your host about the final approach if you have heavy bags or limited walking range. Check whether reception is in the same building as the room. Save the door code offline if one is needed. Reaching the right street is only useful if you can enter when you get there.

Compare rail, bus and a booked pickup

Choose rail when you want to separate the airport leg from road traffic and can manage a city connection. Choose the bus when its city stops fit your address. Choose a booked pickup when fewer changes matter more than keeping the travel cost low. None of these choices removes the need to check your final walking route.

Route Complete travel chain Good fit Main trade-off
Airport train Airport station, Gara de Nord, city transport or car, final walk A traveller comfortable changing at a main station Gara de Nord is not Old Town
Bus 100 Airport bus stop, a suitable city stop, final walk or connection A stay reached easily from the bus route Road delays affect the trip
Booked pickup Confirmed meeting place, vehicle trip, accessible drop-off, final walk Bags, a group or a difficult arrival time Vehicle access and waiting terms need checking

These are route choices, not live fare quotes. Add the fare for each leg when comparing public transport. For a car, compare the full confirmed amount, including luggage or child-seat charges where relevant. Do not judge a train by its rail fare against a door-to-door car total.

Transferoviar Călători's normal airport timetable lists 25 minutes from Henri Coandă to București Nord over 19 rail kilometres. It shows 12 TFC departures from the airport, including 07:52–08:17, 09:12–09:37 and 21:12–21:37. These are one operator's services, not the total frequency of the airport line.

TFC's airport single fare is 6.50 lei, payable in lei by cash or card at its ticket offices and onboard. Contactless card payment is available on its trains. Add the city transport or car fare from Gara de Nord when comparing the full arrival cost.

The STB route page for bus 100 names Piața Unirii 2 and Aeroport Henri Coandă as endpoints. Compare the bus's final city stop with the train plus its metro connection. Use the official timetable for your travel date and the fare for the operator you will board.

Take the airport train, then finish the Old Town leg

Follow airport signs to the railway station after collecting your bags. Before boarding, check the departure display and the operator of the train you intend to take. The airport service has more than one operator. A ticket should match the service you board; do not assume a ticket for one operator covers another.

Search for the airport station and București Nord when planning this leg. Gara de Nord is the familiar name of the main city station. Keep the station name on your phone so you can recognise it on signs and in trip tools. Use the national rail trip planner for dated departures.

At Gara de Nord, pause before leaving the station. Decide whether you will use the metro or a car for the next leg. A metro trip means finding the right platform, changing where needed and walking from the final station. Those steps matter with a large suitcase, even when the train trip itself was simple.

For Old Town, one metro chain is Gara de Nord on M1 to Piața Victoriei, then M2 toward Universitate or Piața Unirii. Universitate serves the northern approach; Piața Unirii serves the south. Include the interchange, station exits and walk to your room; the 25-minute airport train is only the first leg.

Save the walking directions from your chosen exit to the property. A station name alone does not tell you which exit faces your street. Allow room in the plan to check the map without standing in a doorway or on a stair. If the last leg looks awkward with bags, a car from Gara de Nord may suit better than another change.

Take bus 100 and choose the right city stop

The bus can give a simpler chain if its stops line up with your stay. Consult the current route before boarding, and check the direction on the vehicle. Airport-bound and city-bound services use the same route number. Looking only for “100” is not enough.

For a stay near the southern Old Town streets, Piața Unirii is an obvious stop to compare. It is still a large junction. So check the pavement route to your entrance. A shorter route on a map can involve extra crossings.

With bags, the clearer route may be the better choice.

If your address is near the north of Old Town, compare the earlier central stops shown on the current route. Do not stay on until the terminus merely because a guide says the bus goes to the centre. The useful stop is the one that reduces the entire trip to your door.

Check ticket purchase and validation rules on STB's official site before you travel. If using a phone payment option, confirm that it works on your device and connection before relying on it. Keep proof of the ticket or validation until the trip ends.

Road conditions can change the arrival time. Build a margin before any timed booking on your first day. A delayed flight followed by a slow bus leaves little room for a Palace tour booked too close to landing. It is easier to move a casual walk than a fixed entry slot.

Check a private transfer before booking

A transfer confirmation should name the airport, flight, passengers, luggage and destination. Enter the full address: “city centre” coverage may not include your property. Establish the drop-off and waiting allowance before paying.

Compare these terms instead of a headline trip time:

Save the confirmation and driver's contact details offline. If the driver does not appear, contact the provider to establish the booking's status before arranging another car.

The choice depends on a dated, address-based booking with terms you can read. For a wider view of the city before choosing your base, use the Bucharest guide.

Plan late arrivals, luggage and access needs

Check the public transport connection for the time you expect to leave arrivals. Landing time is not the time you reach the platform or bus stop. Passport checks, bags and a delayed flight can shift the trip into a different service period. Do the same check for the last city leg, not just the airport service.

For step-free travel, ask each operator about the exact station, vehicle and date. A network map can show a lift without proving it will be working when you arrive. Ask the property about steps at the entrance as well. A smooth airport leg cannot solve a room reached only by stairs.

With children, decide how you will carry both bags and tired passengers through a change. With a pushchair, include lifts and street crossings in the route. If you choose a car, confirm the suitable child seat in advance. Do not treat a request in a comment box as a confirmed seat.

Keep a backup that changes one part of the plan. For example, take the train to Gara de Nord. Then use a car if the city connection no longer suits. Or keep a booked pickup contact if a late arrival makes public transport awkward.

Avoid a backup that depends on another unverified connection.

For the return, reverse the address-to-airport chain and add your airline's required check-in margin. Confirm the airport code again. A central departure point and a reliable first leg matter more than the quickest trip someone else once made.

Questions about Bucharest airport to Old Town

Does the airport train go to Old Town?

The airport rail connection goes to Gara de Nord. You then need city transport or a car and a final walk to your address. Compare that whole chain with the airport bus before deciding. Gara de Nord suits onward rail travel, but reaching it still leaves the journey to Old Town.

Is the bus better than the train?

It can be if the current bus stops fit your stay and you want fewer changes. The train suits a route through Gara de Nord, especially when you value a rail airport leg. Compare bags, the last walk and your arrival time. Neither mode wins for every address.

Can a transfer take me directly to my hotel?

A car can reach an address only where vehicle access allows it. Confirm the exact drop-off with the provider and your stay. If the street is pedestrian-only, ask for the nearest legal stopping point and walking directions. Check this before booking if carrying bags or walking is difficult.

Where should I stay for an easy arrival?

Choose an actual address with a clear connection from your preferred arrival route. A broad “Old Town” label is less useful than the nearest stop and the walk from it. The Bucharest area comparison weighs access against nightlife and street noise. So you can choose a base for the whole stay.

If your stay includes an outing beyond the capital, compare day trips from Bucharest after settling the arrival. An airport pickup and a day excursion serve different parts of the trip.

Verdict on the complete arrival trip

Choose your Bucharest airport to Old Town route by its final leg. Use the train if Gara de Nord makes a sensible connection. Use the bus if its stops shorten the trip to your door. Pay for a confirmed pickup when avoiding changes matters most.

Then use the Old Town walk after you have dropped your bags.
