The short answer

Compare Caru' cu Bere and Hanu' lui Manuc for Romanian food in Old Town. Choose Zexe for a meal on Bulevardul Aviatorilor in the north, or Simbio for weekend brunch on Strada Negustori. Use the menu prices below to compare the order you want. Reserve a table when its room or time matters, and raise dietary requirements with the kitchen before choosing dishes.

By Unseen Romania · Updated

Choose Bucharest restaurants around the meal you want and the part of the city you will be in. Caru' cu Bere and Hanu' lui Manuc give you Old Town choices. Zexe belongs to a northern outing. Simbio offers another setting beyond the old lanes, with separate brunch and later menus.

Read the current menu before making the booking.

Choose Bucharest restaurants by meal and neighbourhood

For an Old Town lunch, choose between Stavropoleos and the southern end of the historic streets. Caru' cu Bere sits by the monastery; Hanu' lui Manuc is near the Curtea Veche end of the walk. Either can become a meal break without leaving the district. Zexe and Simbio belong to different parts of the city, so give those meals their own place in the day's route.

For brunch, timing matters as much as the menu. Simbio publishes a weekend brunch service, while Caru' cu Bere has a separate morning offer. A weekday lunch at Simbio uses a different menu. For a celebration, choose the dining room or courtyard you want, then arrange the table and transport around it.

Compare actual venues by area and occasion

Venue Address and area Cuisine and meal Meal prices and service times Occasion
Caru' cu Bere Strada Stavropoleos 5, Old Town Romanian soups, grilled dishes and sarmale Soups 35.50–49.50 lei; sarmale 87 lei in the September menu Historic interior with an Old Town walk
Hanu' lui Manuc Strada Franceză 62–64, southern Old Town Traditional Romanian food Venue hours extend to 02:00 on Friday and Saturday A meal in a historic inn setting
Zexe Bulevardul Aviatorilor 40, Sector 1 Romanian cooking Opening at 12:00 except Tuesday at 14:00 Lunch in the north or a special dinner
Simbio Strada Negustori 26, Sector 2 Comfort food; separate brunch menu Weekend brunch 10:00–16:00; kitchen break 16:00–17:00 A slower weekend meal east of Old Town

Venue hours and kitchen service are different: use the meal window in each profile.

If you are choosing for a group, settle the main need before sending several booking requests. Ask about a table large enough for the actual party, any deposit and the rules for cancelling. Keep the reply. A request submitted through a form is not always a confirmed booking.

1. Caru' cu Bere: Old Town meal and architecture

Caru' cu Bere is a useful candidate when the building is part of the dining plan. Its official site describes the decorated interior and links the food and booking pages. The address is Strada Stavropoleos 5., official venue page.

The official menu page links the food, drinks and breakfast menus. Select the menu for your actual meal instead of relying on a special-event PDF found through a search engine. An event menu can describe a different service from an ordinary lunch.

Use the restaurant for a deliberate meal during the Old Town walk. Leave time to reach it, check in and order. If the interior matters to you, ask which space your table will be in. A booking at a named restaurant does not always settle the exact room or terrace.

The venue's food pages discuss Romanian dishes, including mici. That can help you identify a first order, but do not assume every companion wants a large meat-led meal. Read the whole current menu together before reserving. Ask the restaurant about ingredients when a dish must meet a dietary need.

Best fit: a visitor who wants the meal and the historic interior to be part of the same Old Town experience. It can pair naturally with Stavropoleos and the surrounding streets. You do not need to make a separate crossing of the city just to reach it.

Limitation: a decorated dining room may be lively rather than quiet. Request the room or terrace you want when reserving, and mention an early finish or quiet conversation if either determines your choice.

Put a price on the meal

The September 2026 menu lists vegetable cream soup at 35.50 lei, chicken soup with noodles at 39.50 lei, beef soup at 42.50 lei, tripe soup at 43.50 lei and bean soup in bread at 49.50 lei. Sarmale with polenta, sour cream and chilli costs 87 lei. Turkey schnitzel is 63 lei; the listed sauce is included, but choose any additional side from its own menu entry.

For two people sharing, the whole pork knuckle with cabbage, polenta, horseradish and chilli is listed at 245 lei. A half-knuckle plate is 136 lei. Compare the shared portion with two individual orders instead of comparing the whole platter's price with one main. The same menu lists papanași at 61 lei.

A light soup lunch and turkey schnitzel dinner total 98.50 lei before sides and drinks. Soup followed by sarmale costs 122.50–136.50 lei, depending on the soup. These are calculated meal examples, not set menus. Bread and drinks have their own prices, so add what you intend to order.

For breakfast, the morning offer lists Nenea Dumitrache at 44 lei, Mița Baston at 46 lei and Cațavencu at 53 lei, with specified hot drinks included. It describes poached eggs with guacamole toast for the first, boiled eggs with cheese and smoked pork for the second, and a rustic omelette for the third. The offer excludes Romanian public holidays. Its stated morning service begins earlier than the general opening time elsewhere on the site, so confirm breakfast arrival time with the restaurant.

Plan the meal around the walk

Book the meal at a point where it gives the walk a rest, instead of forcing the whole morning into a deadline. If lunch is fixed, keep museum entry before it modest. An unexpected queue at a museum can create a clash even when the two places are close.

After lunch, choose a short extension toward Calea Victoriei or return to your base. A longer meal can change the pace you want. Keep the next part optional unless you have a performance or another booking that cannot move.

2. Hanu' lui Manuc: choose the inn setting deliberately

Hanu' lui Manuc is at Strada Franceză 62–64, near the southern end of Old Town. Its own contact page gives venue hours of 10:00–24:00 Sunday to Thursday and 10:00–02:00 Friday and Saturday. Those are venue hours, not a stated last-order time.

Compare it with Caru' cu Bere by the meal and dining space you want, instead of treating the two as interchangeable famous names. Look at the menu, ask where the table will be and consider how the venue fits the rest of the day. The best choice can differ for lunch and for an evening occasion.

If the courtyard or a particular room is the reason for going, request it directly. Read the confirmation to see whether that space is guaranteed or only requested. Weather and private events can affect outdoor or room arrangements.

For a traditional-food meal, use the Romanian food guide to choose the kind of dish you want to try. Then read this kitchen's description. A dish can vary in meat, sauce and accompaniments. General knowledge of Romanian food is a starting point for ordering, not proof of the ingredients in front of you.

Best fit: a meal in the historic centre where the inn setting is a deliberate part of the outing. It can give the day a clear pause after a street walk. Choose the time around the visit, instead of rushing a meal between two large interiors.

Limitation: programme and seating details need confirming for the date. Do not assume a photo of an outdoor table establishes the space you will receive. If an evening show or music matters, ask whether it is scheduled and whether it affects the booking terms.

Make the reservation specific

Give the actual party size and meal time. Say whether you are requesting a chosen space and whether there are access needs. Ask about any deposit or minimum order before agreeing. Those details can matter more than the restaurant's general popularity.

If you are late, use the venue's confirmed contact route. Do not assume a table will be held indefinitely after the booking time. Equally, do not create another booking elsewhere while the first one is still active unless you have cancelled it. Keep the booking status clear.

3. Zexe: put the northern location into the plan

Zexe's own site lists its current location at Bulevardul Aviatorilor 40 and presents a Romanian-food menu route., official Zexe site. Use that address instead of an old listing for another location with the same name.

This is a candidate for a day in the north of Bucharest, not a casual step off the Old Town route. Compare the restaurant's location with the museum or park you plan to visit. A meal that fits the route can make sense even if it is farther from your hotel. A meal that requires repeated cross-city travel may fit less well.

Zexe's own menu gives several ways to order beyond grilled meat. It lists mushroom borș at 32 lei, meatball soup at 35 lei and kid-goat soup at 42 lei. Veal stew with polenta is 67 lei; wild-boar cabbage rolls with cabbage and polenta are 72 lei; goose-breast rolls in vine leaves are 78 lei. These are dish prices, before extra courses and drinks.

For a meat-free direction, the menu labels bean spread at 32 lei, aubergine salad at 40 lei and house zacuscă at 42 lei as vegan. Mushroom stew with polenta is listed at 62 lei. Read the dish description rather than assuming every vegetable accompaniment is meat-free: some potatoes and cabbage are cooked in duck fat.

A mushroom soup and veal stew total 99 lei before drinks; a 42-lei soup with wild-boar sarmale totals 114 lei. These calculations make Zexe easier to compare with a soup-and-main meal in Old Town. The food differs, so choose the dishes you want rather than treating the totals as identical meals.

For a special occasion, ask about the table, pace of service and any event use of the space. A venue that hosts private events may have different plans on chosen dates. Confirm the part you will use. Do not infer a private or quiet setting from a gallery photo.

Best fit: a planned Romanian meal that belongs to a northern city day or an evening you are willing to travel for. Its current address is useful when deciding whether to combine it with the Village Museum or another northern choice. Compare the actual route instead of assuming every place called central is nearby.

Limitation: Old Town convenience is not the reason to choose it. Allow for getting there and back. Check the current kitchen and booking plans with the venue, especially when the meal is the main purpose of travelling to that part of the city.

Leave room for the return

Plan the return before dinner. Save your accommodation's address and entrance instructions. For public transport, use departures at the time the meal will end. For a car, agree a pickup point where it can stop.

For a daytime visit, build the meal around the museum's actual opening plans. A late lunch and an early museum closure can compete for the same time. Choose the main priority first. The Bucharest guide helps keep the northern outing separate from a packed central day.

4. Simbio: compare brunch with later food service

Simbio is at Strada Negustori 26, east of Old Town. The official site lists weekend brunch from 10:00 to 16:00, followed by lunch and dinner from 17:00 to 22:00. On weekdays it lists lunch and dinner from 11:00 to 22:00. A separate kitchen notice says it closes from 16:00 to 17:00.

Avoid the kitchen break when planning a meal. Weekend brunch and dinner are separate visits, rather than one menu served throughout the day.

This matters because a restaurant can be open while the kitchen is between menus. Choose the meal you want before deciding when to arrive. Brunch is not simply the lunch menu served earlier. Read the current menu instead of assuming the same dishes are available throughout the day.

The venue describes its food as comfort food and provides online reservations. Choose brunch as the main part of a slower morning, with time to sit rather than a narrow gap before a tour. Its separate brunch and lunch menus make it worth choosing the meal first, then the arrival time.

Negustori gives you a different location from the busiest Old Town lanes. Trace the walk from your previous stop and check the route onward. It can fit a deliberate change of setting. It is not necessary to cross the city when you only need a quick meal before another appointment.

Best fit: a brunch or later meal selected for its current menu and the setting beyond the old lanes. It can suit a slower morning when you are not trying to reach an early museum opening. Match it to the meal window instead of a generic restaurant pin.

Limitation: kitchen service and venue opening are different details. Verify both. If you arrive between service periods, coffee availability does not establish that the meal you wanted can be ordered. Plan another time if that meal is central to your day.

Read the menu as a complete order

Start with the main dish. Then check whether the accompaniments are included. A photo can show potatoes, bread or sauce that is priced separately. Read the written description and ask if it is unclear.

Comparing a complete order avoids the false economy of a cheap-looking main that needs several additions.

Look at drinks as part of the meal instead of an afterthought. Confirm the serving size and type, especially for wine or bottled water. If you want a fixed budget, agree on the broad order before adding several rounds. A large drinks menu can change the final bill more than the choice between two mains.

Check whether a dish is priced per portion or by weight. Ask how the amount is chosen when the menu uses a weight-based price. This is particularly useful for a shared dish. The written unit should be clear before the food arrives.

So you are not trying to reconstruct the charge afterward.

For a set menu, read the included courses and service period. Some offers may apply only on chosen days or exclude holidays. Do not use an old lunch PDF as a promise of today's price. Open the current page linked by the venue or ask for the menu that applies to your visit.

If the table has several diners, decide whether you are sharing or ordering separately. Check that a shared dish suits everyone's needs before choosing it. A large platter may be less useful than separate orders when diets or portion preferences differ. Tell the server how you intend to divide the meal.

Reserve and confirm the kitchen's service

Reserve through the restaurant's own booking page and save its confirmation. Read back the date, time and party size. Distinguish a confirmed table from an acknowledgement that your request was sent.

Ask whether the table has a time limit if you want a long meal. For an occasion, establish any deposit, cancellation charge or fixed menu. Make those conditions part of the choice before paying. A table that looks suitable in a gallery may come with plans you would not choose for an ordinary dinner.

Separate opening hours from last food orders. A venue can keep the room open after the kitchen closes, and the food service can pause during the day. If arriving late, ask what can actually be ordered. Do not rely on a search panel's closing time to settle the question.

For an early meal before a performance, tell the restaurant the time you need to leave. Ask whether the intended order can fit. Then keep a margin for paying and reaching the venue. A booking time is the start of the meal, not a promise that every course will arrive to a fixed clock.

If plans change, cancel through the channel that confirmed your table.

Ask dietary questions the menu cannot answer

A menu label helps narrow choices, but the kitchen must answer questions about the recipe. Tell the restaurant the ingredient or condition that matters. Ask about stock, sauces and cooking fats, not only the visible main ingredient. If you need to avoid cross-contact, say so directly instead of asking only whether a dish “contains” something.

For vegetarian meals, inspect soups and vegetable dishes for the actual recipe. For vegan meals, ask about dairy, eggs and other animal ingredients in sauces or dough. A meat-free description is not enough to settle every dietary rule. Choose a different dish or venue if the answer remains unclear.

For gluten avoidance, check flour in sauces, coatings and shared work surfaces. For nuts, ask about garnishes and sauces and desserts. Do not infer the kitchen's steps from a list of ingredients alone. The venue is the source for what it can prepare and how it handles the order.

When language is a barrier, keep a clear written description of the rule. Show it before ordering and check that the relevant person has understood. Avoid a complicated meal with several uncertain substitutions if a simpler confirmed option exists. Your choice should follow a clear answer, not a reassuring guess.

Raise strict dietary requirements before reserving so the kitchen can say whether it can prepare a suitable meal.

Romanian dishes and other meal choices

Use the Romanian food primer to identify dishes you want to try. It explains names such as sarmale, ciorbă, mici and mămăligă without claiming one fixed recipe for every kitchen. Then read the restaurant's own description. This avoids ordering solely from an English translation that leaves out an important ingredient.

You do not need to try every traditional dish at one sitting. Choose a soup and a main, or share something where the portions and ingredients suit. Leave dessert for another meal if you prefer. A first visit can include familiar food alongside regional dishes without making every order a test of completeness.

For breakfast or brunch, choose a venue whose current service actually fits the time. A late brunch can take the place of lunch, which may free the afternoon from another meal stop. Keep that decision in the day's route. Do not book a large lunch immediately after a meal you want to enjoy slowly.

For a light meal between museums, location and service pace may matter more than a landmark dining room. Look for a current menu near the route you already have. If there is no suitable confirmed choice, move lunch earlier or shorten the morning. Travelling far for a quick meal can use the time you meant to save.

For an occasion dinner, give the restaurant its own part of the evening. Choose the setting and service conditions that suit the group. Then plan transport around it. Avoid attaching the meal to a long day trip with an uncertain return.

A clear booking works best when the rest of the day can reach it comfortably.

Match the meal to your city day

On an Old Town day, compare the two historic-centre venues before the walk. Read both menus and choose the setting you prefer. You can keep the other as an option for another visit without reserving both. Pair the meal with the Old Town route so it becomes a rest instead of another transfer.

On a Palace day, check how much time remains after the entry and tour. Do not make a restaurant booking across the city too close to the expected finish. A flexible lunch can fit better, followed by a planned dinner once the timed visit is complete. Read the Palace guide before fixing the day.

On a northern museum or park day, Zexe's location is worth comparing with the actual route. Check the entrance you will leave from and how you will reach the restaurant. Nearby on a broad map is not the same as a clear walk. Keep weather and the energy left after the museum in mind.

On a slower morning, Simbio's brunch service may fit better than a full sequence of early sights. Choose that pace deliberately. The three-day itinerary has enough flexibility to swap a museum or walk. A meal you care about deserves time just as a gallery does.

For the last evening, avoid a route that makes packing and departure difficult. Confirm the next day's airport or station transport before dinner. If you want an early finish, ask about service pace and settle the order accordingly. A relaxed final meal is easier when the useful details are already clear.

Read and settle the bill

Ask for the itemised bill and compare it with what you ordered. Check extra bread, sides, water and any service item you did not understand. Raise a question while you are still at the table, with the menu available. It is easier to resolve a unit or portion issue there than after leaving.

If paying by card, read the currency and amount before approving the transaction. If offered a choice of currency conversion, compare it with the card issuer's terms instead of assuming either option is free. The Romania money guide explains how to compare exchange and payment costs.

Ask how splitting the bill works before the end of a large group meal. Separate payments, separate checks and a single bill divided by the diners are different plans. Decide within the group what you intend. Do not leave the server to reconstruct a long shared order at the moment everyone wants to leave.

Treat any tip as a deliberate choice after reading the bill and the venue's policy. Check whether a service item has already been included. The amount you choose should follow the actual bill and service, instead of a rule copied from another country.

Decide what matters when the choices are close

If two menus suit equally well, compare the part of the day around the meal. One restaurant may sit naturally between the morning walk and the afternoon museum. Another may require a trip in each direction. The first can be the better choice for an ordinary lunch even when the second has a more familiar name.

For a celebration, the balance may be different. A dining space you have deliberately chosen can justify a separate evening and its transport. Confirm the exact table plan and any event conditions. Then leave the evening free enough to use them.

A special meal loses much of its point when every course has to fit before the next appointment.

Keep one alternative near the route if your preferred table is unavailable. Choose another meal you would want, with a menu and service time that fit, rather than a long list of distant names.

Questions about Bucharest restaurants

Which restaurant is best for a first Romanian meal?

Compare the menu with the dishes you want and the area you will be in. Caru' cu Bere and Hanu' lui Manuc give you historic-centre choices; Zexe offers another location to consider. No single venue suits every budget or occasion. Read the current menu and confirm the table before making the meal part of a fixed schedule.

Should I reserve a table?

Reserve when the venue, dining space or time matters. Save the confirmation with any deposit and cancellation terms. A submitted request may still need a reply. For a flexible meal, ask the venue about tables on the day; old reviews cannot tell you the current wait.

Can I find vegetarian food at these venues?

Read each current menu. Then ask the kitchen about the exact dish and preparation. A vegetable name does not establish the stock or cooking fat. Vegan needs add further ingredient questions.

If cross-contact matters, raise that directly before booking. Choose a meal on the strength of the venue's exact answer, instead of a general cuisine label.

Is Old Town the only useful dining area?

No. It is convenient for a historic-centre day, but a northern outing or a slower morning elsewhere can suit another venue. Match the restaurant to the route instead of crossing the capital for every meal. The place that fits your day and current menu needs is more useful than the one with the most familiar name.

Verdict on choosing a Bucharest meal

Choose Bucharest restaurants by menu, setting and route fit. Keep historic-centre venues for the day you are there, give a northern meal its proper travel time and check brunch separately from dinner. Confirm the actual table and kitchen service. Then enjoy a meal you selected for your visit, at the pace and setting you wanted.
